Common Waves x Anton Kats: Narrowcasting Neighbourhoods – Mobile Radio as a Tool

Radio doesn’t always have to happen within the sealed off environment of the studio. It may even be a lot more exciting to take radio out to the street.
To the artist and musician Anton Kats, this form of radio depends on the interaction happening in the moment. He particularly uses the technique of narrowcasting, short distance broadcasting, to set up temporary radio spaces in unusual places like a retirement home.
Mobile radio, as it is practiced by Kats, means transcending classical relations between sender and receiver. In an artist talk and conversation with Anton Kats, we will discuss mobile radio as a tool and unveil ways of employing it, drawing back on his extensive experience in setting up temporary radio stations.
